My Mama and Papa went up to the Finger Lakes in New York State this past weekend. They brought back lots of goodies—some “ethical” cheese and some homemade lemongrass (my favorite!) soap for me. (They brought my brother something called Dandy Brew–which is some kind of dandelion drink a bit like coffee.)

But mostly they brought back lots of veggies. They got a ton of cabbage to make sauerkraut with a family friend. (Dad did this on Monday and said they made 30+ gallons.) And they picked up this massive carrot, some Christmas tree broccoli (EDIT: Apparently it’s called Romanesco Broccoli or Roman Cauliflower) and purple cauliflower. (These last two seem like good veggies for finicky kids. I mean, I’m 25 and I think it’s more fun to eat these than regular.) They also got some pumpkins and Hubbard squash and my Mama made some soup from a recipe my cousin gave us. It’s super delicious so I do believe I’ll share the recipe here tomorrow.

Last but not least, they brought back lots of wines! My Dad had to go to his favorite winery, McGregor. (We have to do some research on whether or not their whites are vegan.) My brother and I love Four Chimneys and Hunt Country, and not just because they offer vegan wines. The former makes wonderful organic fruit wines!
Are you getting your hands on any fun foods lately? Making anything special?

Not being funny, but how are wines not vegan? (Or what makes a wine vegan?)
People ask this quite a bit! Sometimes wines are filtered through things like egg whites, gelatin or isinglass (which I think comes from a fish bladder or something…)
So pretty!
I haven’t gotten my hands on any fancy vegetation.
But I did make those pumpkin muffins last night. That’s something.
christmas tree broccoli??? i never knew that existed. i also didn’t know about vegan wines. i am learning so much.
just regular csa vegetables around here. i made a fall salad for lunch tomorrow–mixed salad greens, roasted sweet potatoes, toasted pecans, smoked cheese, pears, and roasted squash seeds. mmm…i’m looking forward to your soup recipe!
I did some research today after realizing hardly anyone else calls it Christmas Tree Broccoli. It’s called Romanesco Broccoli or Roman Cauliflower.
