Scrappy Pot Holders

Scrappy Pot Holders.
Ever since November of last year (according to my notes) I’ve wanted to make some scrappy pot holders. That’s when I did up my sketch and was on that Quilt-As-You-Go high. (Remember I made my Grandma Inge this quilt and my Grandma Rosemary this one.) But really, the inspiration came when I saw Penny’s lovely string quilt tutorial for the first time.

Finally a month or so ago, I dove in. I had the home decor scrap strips all cut and ready to go. I did a different quilting style on each pot holder–one close to the seams and one down the center of the strip. My Mama received these as gifts (she gets a lot of my prototypes!) but has only hung them up, refusing to use them because they are too pretty. (She always says that, eventually she will use them.)

I made about 8 or so more blocks and originally intended to make more pot holders to either put in the shop or give as gifts. But I decided to save them for a lightweight picnic quilt (I say lightweight because I wouldn’t put batting in it, considering it’s home decor weight.) But I would need to make a lot more blocks considering they are only 8 1/2″, so if I wasn’t feel that ambitious, I could easily make a new dog bed cover.

Those are really, VERY pretty. I always have lots of strings and tend to avoid them. Maybe I’ll make a string journal cover next!

I’m with your mom — they are too pretty to use. Finally, I’m using the potholders you sent me a year ago! But I only use them for things that I know will not stain or smudge them.
